Emil Manel established the company business back in 1952. After he retired from his farming business, he bought one of the very first front-end loaders in Rochester. For the next 20 years he did most of his excavation work for various builders and developers with a dozer, backhoe and loader. In 1972 his son Chuck Manel joined the organization, thus brining about the company’s incorporation. Following his graduation from the University of Rochester in 1973 as a math major with a minro in education, Chcuck then took over the company as president. Since then Manel Excavating has done mostly paving and sealing work.
Back in 1973, the stoning and paving work was done with one truck. The company has been steadily growing since then. Today we have all the equipment (large or small) to tackle any job. Our goal has always been to be as self sufficient as possible, increasing the types of work that can be done in-house to improve upon quality control and craftsmanship.
Two-way methods
With our many years of experience, we have developed a proven two-part method for paving and preparing your driveway (if it involves, removing, widening or digging out). Your driveway will be excavated, graded and stone will be placed down and then rolled according to your contract or particular request. When a significant amount of time has passed (usually two to three weeks) and the driveway has settled, we will return to the paving job. This method practically eliminates any sinking or settlement problems.
In just about every case, all asphalt will be installed using one of our four self-propelled pavers. The pavers range from 8-20 feet and are capable of accommodating a wide variety of asphalt needs. Let us handle your paving job in Rochester, NY.

Binder Paving
Binder asphalt offers a coarser grade of blacktop that contains a higher percentage of bigger stones. When larger stones are added to the asphalt mix, they increase stability and raise the load factor so the driveway can endure more breaking or cracking.
We generally use a #1 fine dense binder on our residential applications; although it looks just slightly coarser on the top, it provides a much stronger mix. Oftentimes contractors use a fine binder that is a few dollars cheaper but breaks down in the long run.
Top Paving
Top asphalt contains a finer stone that doesn’t have quite the strength of a binder. The best application for top asphalt is as a re-surface or on a driveway where the base has been the same for a number of years.

Sealing
Because of excessive heat, ultraviolet rays and substances such as oil, grease, gasoline and salt, asphalt driveways can start to break down. Furthermore, potholes can appear in addition to grass working its way under the asphalt.

Patching
We offer several different patching options.
Mill & Patch
If driveway or parking lot is in good condition and has a few bad areas we suggest milling. This would be to mill out distressed areas approx 2″, remove milling and replace with asphalt to allow for a flush joint. Then hot tar is applied to prevent water infiltration.
Overlay Patching
If the condition of the project is questionable, we can overlay patch. This is cheaper and although permanent, it is not as long lasting or cosmetic as milling.
